Below is a (entirely personal) shortlist curated by our Francesca Modena and Francesca Minozzi (who are among the festival’s organisers) of the most interesting events at the Festival.
Let’s start with the extras, that is, the out-of-competition films.
Friday evening at the Astra: The Settlers, a reportage in which Louis Theroux spent a great deal of time with Israeli settlers and portrays them up close; the author will be in the room and it is a chance to hear a legend of contemporary documentary.
Sunday at the Truffaut, at 2 pm: Special Operation, a one-of-a-kind film about the occupation of the Chernobyl power plant by Russian troops at the start of the war in Ukraine, edited exclusively from footage recorded by closed-circuit cameras.
The producer will be in the room in conversation with Marco Grasso.
Then, of course, the whole marathon on Gaza and the occupied territories, Sunday at the Astra from 3 pm to 9 pm, with four films and directors/activists in the room. You can also decide not to watch all four, but the ticket must be bought before the start (or in the days before).
Among the films in competition: Antidote (a great film!), In the belly of AI, War on women, The night won’t end, Gaza, Surviving Syria’s Prisons, Deserted.
The format for the shorts and mediums is also nice: with a single ticket you watch all five in a row.
“Beyond cinema” highlights: the presentation of the book by Wu Ming 1 on Wednesday afternoon, the Occupied Territories exhibition by Fabio Bucciarelli, the talk with Marco D’Eramo (all this on Wednesday), Friday at 6 pm Le radici profonde della destra (The deep roots of the right) with Valerio Renzi and Christian Raimo, Donata Columbro on Saturday morning and of course Francesca Albanese on Saturday afternoon, the DIG Party on Saturday evening at the Juta in the Giardini.
Finally, on Sunday at the Astra there will be a second screening of the films that won the DIG Awards (the awards ceremony is on Saturday evening).
